When Might Your Pet Need Vet Surgery?

Deciding when your pet needs surgery can be overwhelming for any pet owner, but it is important to understand the conditions that may require surgery, to make sure your pet gets the necessary veterinary attention. Here are some common situations in which your pet might need surgical support:

Emergency Situations

Pets who experience a traumatic injury, such as a car accident or a fall from height, often require vet surgery to stabilise their condition and repair damaged tissues or organs, fix broken bones, or remove foreign objects. Surgery may also help to control bleeding and prevent infections.

Routine Procedures

Sterilisation, also known as neutering or spaying, is a common, routine surgical procedure that is important to help prevent unwanted litters and improve the health and well-being of pets. Sterilisation can prevent certain diseases and behaviours.

Orthopaedic Issues

Orthopaedic surgery may be necessary for pets with fractured bones or joint issues, to improve their quality of life by restoring mobility and reducing pain.

Tumour or Lump Removal

If your pet has a lump, vet surgery can determine the nature of the growth, by allowing for a biopsy to test if the growth is benign or malignant. It may also be necessary to remove the growth completely, to prevent the lump from spreading and causing further harm to the animal.

Chronic Conditions

Surgery can help pets with chronic conditions, like bladder stones or gastrointestinal disorders, by managing or treating their symptoms, alleviating pain, addressing the root cause of the condition, and improving quality of life.

Our trained staff is fully committed to giving your pet top-notch, compassionate veterinary care.

Our Surgical Services

Our veterinarians perform a broad variety of surgical procedures — including routine surgeries such as sterilisation and dental procedures like scaling, polishing, and tooth extraction; soft-tissue surgery such as biopsy, mass removal, foreign body removal, and exploratory surgery; and orthopaedic surgery which includes basic fracture and dislocation repairs.

Learn more about these procedures:

Spaying and Neutering: Also known as sterilisation or desexing, these routine surgical procedures provide numerous health benefits for your furkid, including preventing unwanted litter, reducing the risk of certain cancers, decreasing certain unwanted behaviours such as aggression issues, and promoting overall well-being.

Animal sterilisation is a common and safe vet surgery. It is a one-time, permanent procedure that lasts your pet’s entire lifetime. Most pets recover quickly from sterilisation surgery, returning to normal within 24 to 48 hours.

Orthopaedic Surgery: Orthopaedics refers to the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of conditions concerning the musculoskeletal system, such as broken bones and dislocations. Our vets perform orthopaedic surgeries including fracture repairs, dislocation repairs, and femoral head ostectomy (FHO) for cats and dogs.

FHO is a surgery to remove the head and neck of the femur (thigh bone), aimed to remove bone-on-bone contact so as to reduce pain and discomfort. One reason this is often done is to treat hip dysplasia (commonly seen in dogs), whereby the hip joint is misaligned or malformed. Other common reasons include fractures involving the hip, and severe arthritis.

Soft-Tissue Surgery: These procedures address various conditions affecting your pet’s soft tissues — such as skin, muscle, and internal organs. At Paws N’ Claws, we perform a wide range of soft-tissue surgeries, including and not limited to:

i. Biopsy: This minimally invasive procedure helps diagnose a variety of conditions by collecting a small tissue sample for microscopic examination and analysis. Biopsies are a crucial diagnostic tool, allowing for early detection, targeted and customised treatment, and peace of mind about your pet’s well-being. For example, performing biopsies can diagnose cancer, infections, autoimmune disases, inflammatory diseases, certain organ malfunctions, and more.

ii. Lump or Mass Removal: Finding a lump on your pet can be concerning. Our veterinarians take a thorough approach, starting with a biopsy to diagnose the growth and determine the most appropriate course of action. In some cases, complete surgical removal may be recommended. We prioritise minimally invasive techniques and a Fear-Free approach whenever possible, to promote faster healing and minimise discomfort for your pet.

iii. Foreign Body Removal: Our pets are naturally curious creatures, and sometimes their curiosity leads them to swallow objects such as small toy parts, bones, household items such as rubber bands or hair ties, coins, batteries, and human medication. If your pet has ingested an object that can’t be passed naturally, it can lead to a serious intestinal blockage. It’s important to seek veterinary attention immediately to prevent serious complications, remove the foreign body safely, and ensure a faster recovery for your furbaby.

iv. C-Section: We offer Caesarean sections (C-sections) for pets experiencing birthing difficulties, facing complications during delivery, or if a natural birth is not possible to deliver the puppies or kittens.

v. Exploratory Surgery: In some cases, further investigation is needed to diagnose internal issues or to treat certain conditions. With exploratory surgery, the vet will make an incision to carefully examine your pet’s internal organs, tissues, or systems to identify any abnormalities or underlying causes of symptoms.

The list above is not exhaustive. Please reach out to our friendly staff if you have questions about our vet surgery services.

What to expect for surgeries at Paws N’ Claws

• Pre-surgical assessment: Before any veterinary surgery, a thorough assessment is conducted to ensure your pet is suitable and stable to undergo general anaesthesia and surgery.

• Pre-anaesthetic bloodwork: Blood tests help to assess your pet’s overall health and ensure they are a good candidate for surgery.

• Anesthesia and pain management: We use safe and effective anaesthetic protocols tailored to your pet’s individual needs. Pain management and local anaesthesia is a priority before, during, and after surgery.

Post-surgical care: If your pet requires hospitalisation care after the surgery, they may stay at our clinic in Yishun or Thomson, and you can visit them during the in-patient visiting hours. If you are bringing them home, we will provide detailed instructions for post-surgical care at home and offer follow-up appointments to monitor your pet’s recovery.

Fear-Free Veterinary Care

Understanding that a trip to the vet can cause stress and anxiety in furkids, our team at Paws N’ Claws Veterinary Surgery is committed to the Fear-Free approach to veterinary care. We believe that your pet’s emotional health is as important as their physical health.

This evidence-based philosophy focuses on minimising stress and promoting a positive experience for your pet throughout their veterinary care journey with us. We employ various techniques, such as:

  • Offering (healthy) treats, toys, petting, or brushing
  • Minimising handling and restraint
  • Using calming medications and pheromones
  • Speaking in quiet, reassuring voices
  • Creating a comfortable environment with blankets and towels, and calm music
  • Practising positive reinforcement

From the moment they enter our clinic to the time they leave, we strive to make every visit as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for your pets.

We understand that you want the best possible care for your pet, and we’re here to provide it in a way that prioritises their comfort and well-being.
