Caring For Your Feathered Kids

We provide consultation for minor illnesses in birds that require medication. During an avian consultation, our veterinarian may conduct a health check, including a physical examination.

We are also equipped to perform diagnostic tests such as bloodwork and scans such as x-ray (depending on the situation) to get a complete picture of your bird’s health. This allows us to detect potential issues early on and develop a personalised treatment plan if needed.

Our other veterinary services for birds include desexing (sterilisation), hospitalisation, beak trimming (as overgrown beaks can cause discomfort and interfere with feeding), as well as recommendations on diet and nutrition for your feathered companion.

Health Checkup For Birds

What does a health check for avian patients involve? Typically, and depending on your concerns, the veterinarian could make key observations and assessments such as:

• Visual inspection: The vet will closely examine your bird’s overall appearance, for example the posture, feather condition (looking for abnormalities or signs of moulting), and any visible injuries or discharge from the eyes, nares (nostrils), or beak.

• Weight check: Monitoring weight is crucial for birds, as even small fluctuations can be significant for their tiny bodies.

• Palpation: The vet will gently feel your bird’s body to check for any lumps, bumps, or signs of pain or discomfort. They might also assess the keel bone (breastbone) for prominence, which can indicate weight loss or muscle wasting.

• Auscultation: The vet may listen to your bird’s heart and respiratory sounds using a stethoscope to detect any abnormalities in breathing or heart rhythm.

• Vent examination: The vet may briefly examine the vent area (cloaca) for signs of redness, swelling, or discharge, which could indicate infection or other health issues.

While not always part of a basic exam, a health check might also include a gentle examination of the beak and mouth for any abnormalities in their structure or presence of growths.

Depending on the situation and your concerns, the veterinarian might recommend further diagnostics like blood tests or X-rays for a more comprehensive evaluation of your bird’s health.

We understand that handling can be stressful for birds. Avian vets are experienced in minimising stress during examinations and will perform the procedures with gentleness and efficiency.

What People Say About Us

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I’m not sure whether my bird is unwell?

Birds are masters at hiding signs of illness, so it’s not always easy to tell when something’s off. Subtle changes like a drop in energy, changes in droppings, puffed-up feathers, or a quieter-than-usual demeanour might be early indicators that your feathered kid isn’t feeling their best.

It’s always a good idea to bring them in for a check-up, even if you’re unsure. A proper health check allows our vets to detect potential issues early on before they become more serious. Early intervention often makes a big difference in how well your bird responds to treatment.

Can birds get X-rays?

Yes, X-rays are often an effective diagnostic tool for birds, and may be complemented by physical examination findings, blood tests, or other diagnostics.

Avian vets in Singapore may recommend accurate imaging such as X-rays as a safe and painless way to provide a clearer view of a bird’s internal issues. The findings can help evaluate or confirm bone conditions, egg binding, organ abnormalities, respiratory difficulties, and other conditions. For example, radiography can show fractures, reveal the presence of a calcified egg inside the abdomen, and visualise masses in the coelomic cavity of the abdomen.

We have in-house X-ray equipment and capabilities at both of our vet clinics in Upper Thomson and Yishun.

Can vets help with my bird’s behavioural issues?

Behavioural concerns such as feather plucking or aggression in birds can have multiple causes, including medical conditions and psychological causes like boredom or stress. Often, there is an intertwined relationship between behaviour and medical issues; for example, discomfort or pain may trigger or worsen certain behaviours.

A thorough avian veterinary examination will help rule out or treat underlying health problems, diagnose any medical triggers, and advise on training, lifestyle, or environmental changes if required.

Is teleconsultation an option for birds?

Yes, if your bird has a minor, non-urgent medical issue, teleconsultation with our vets can be suitable, allowing you to discuss your feathered kid’s health and receive professional veterinary advice over an online video call from the comfort of your home.

What if my pet bird has a medical emergency?

Seek immediate veterinary attention if your bird shows signs of distress — such as difficulty breathing (e.g. gasping or laboured breathing), sudden weakness or collapse, or a serious injury like broken bones or uncontrolled bleeding. Such symptoms can indicate life-threatening conditions that demand prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Birds are adept at hiding illness or injury, so it is a good idea to consider any noticeable signs of distress as potential emergencies.

Many vet clinics provide emergency veterinary care. For urgent cases, please call us at 8891 4417 (Upper Thomson) or 8809 0787 (Yishun) as soon as possible. If we are unavailable (e.g. due to heavy caseloads or when it’s outside of our operating hours), please contact your nearest 24-hour emergency animal hospital promptly.
