Why Vet Clinic Staff May Bring Your Pet In First

Find out why your pet may be brought inside a vet clinic or hospital separately first before any vet consultations, and how it helps them feel safer, calm, and comfortable.

When visiting your veterinarian, you may notice that the vet nurse or technician sometimes brings your pet into the treatment area without you accompanying them immediately.

Typically, pet owners will wait at the reception area first, and might be invited to join later to review any results and/or to speak with the vet during a full consultation.

This practice of taking pets to a separate area can actually help your pet feel safer, calmer, and more comfortable throughout their visit, reducing lobby stress or reception-related stress.

It is part of the Fear-Free protocol at both our veterinary clinic branches in Upper Thomson and Yishun, typically for outpatient care.

We dive into how this approach often benefits patients at animal hospitals and vet clinics, and how it aligns with Paws N’ Claws’ Fear-Free philosophy in veterinary care.

Please note that this approach focuses on outpatient treatments and services. For inpatients — that is, hospitalised animals staying overnight at our vet clinics — owners are welcome to visit your pets during the allotted visiting hours.

1. Fewer visual and auditory triggers

The reception or waiting area of any vet clinic can be an unfamiliar and overwhelming environment for many animals, due to the presence of other pets and people, noises, smells, lights, and more. Cats in particular are extra sensitive to unfamiliar sights and noises, and may try to hide or swat when they feel cornered or overwhelmed.

Being away from such stressors will limit your pet’s exposure to fewer distractions and triggers, avoiding lobby stress and promoting calm behaviour.

This reduction in stimuli helps your pet remain calm and focused, facilitating a smoother medical examination, diagnostics, and treatment process.

2. Less guarding behaviour

Some pets become anxious or defensive when their owner is present, as they instinctively try to protect the owner in a situation they find stressful. For instance, dogs may growl or stiffen when a vet nurse approaches to examine them, if they see the unfamiliar person as a perceived threat to them and their owner. Some pets may position their body or head to block access to their owner, signalling protective intent.

Separating your pet briefly from you can thus lessen their perceived need to be on guard and help them feel more at ease.

3. Preventing owner anxiety transference

A neutral space allows for a calmer, smoother process for ear swabs, blood draws, and more.

Animals are highly attuned to their owners’ emotions. If you feel nervous or worried, your pet can sense and mirror these feelings, in turn amplifying their own stress levels.

For example, studies show that dogs can pick up on their owners’ emotional states, and dogs’ stress hormone levels correlate closely with their owners’.

Therefore, a neutral, quiet space — such as a calm treatment area within the vet clinic, away from your immediate presence — will minimise such emotional transference and encourage a more positive experience.

4. A calmer, controlled setting

Our treatment and examination spaces are specifically designed to support Fear-Free veterinary care. They feature soft lighting, soothing sounds, calming pheromones, and minimal distractions to create a peaceful atmosphere.

This specialised environment contrasts with the busy reception area or outdoors, helping patients feel more secure and comfortable during their visit.

5. Expert handling with care

Our veterinary staff members are trained in and use low-stress, Fear-Free handling methods such as touch gradient with positive reinforcement to create a consistent and gentle experience for every patient at the clinic.

6. Easier handling with minimal conflict

When owners are present, pets tend to resist more during procedures and examinations, as they are expecting to be rescued or are receiving mixed emotional cues from anxious individuals.

In contrast, without the owner nearby, pets are often less likely to struggle. This allows for safer and more efficient handling by the veterinary team.

7. Faster, smoother, more efficient visits

When pets are calm and cooperative, veterinarians, nurses, and technicians can perform examinations, check-ups, procedures, and treatments more quickly. This minimises the duration and impact of veterinary visits.

If a patient has gone through similar physical examinations or procedures before, it will also mean even shorter wait times.

In many cases, we can collect any necessary samples (with your consent) and perform preliminary checks before the vet consultation, reducing overall time spent at the clinic and making the experience smoother for you and your pet.

8. Ability to use soothing aids to enhance comfort

The treatment areas at both our vet clinics in Yishun and Upper Thomson are equipped with soothing aids such as relaxing music, warm towels, tasty treats, and calming feline- or canine-specific pheromones suitable for cats or dogs.

These tools are most effective when managed in a controlled environment without distractions, including the absence of owners during initial handling of patients.

Committed to Your Pet’s Emotional and Physical Well-Being

Everything we do at Paws N’ Claws Veterinary Surgery is designed to make vet visits less stressful and more comfortable for all our patients.

Bringing your pet inside without you initially and temporarily, is one of many thoughtful strategies that uphold high standards of care and align with our Fear-Free philosophy.

We seek your understanding that due to space constraints, many animal hospitals or clinics in Singapore do not have enough private waiting rooms for every patient that comes in. At Paws N’ Claws, whenever there are any empty rooms available, we can also bring your pet in to wait and rest within a quiet, comfortable setting.

That said, please note that not all pets will necessarily benefit from being away from their owners, and our team keeps a close eye for any indication. If an animal shows signs of separation anxiety or increased stress, we will promptly adjust our approach or bring them back to your side immediately. Your pet’s well-being remains our top priority.
