Understanding Vaccination Titre Testing for Pets

Vaccination titre testing is a simple blood test that measures your pet’s existing immunity to specific diseases. It helps determine if he or she needs a booster shot or are already protected.

We all know the importance of keeping our furkids healthy, and preventative care plays a key role.

Vaccinations are the cornerstone of preventative care, protecting our dogs, cats, and rabbits from nasty diseases such as distemper, canine or feline parvovirus, rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD), and rabies.

But what happens when your pet’s next vaccination appointment rolls around?

Traditionally, veterinarians used to rely on a set schedule for booster shots. However, recent advancements offer a more personalised approach: vaccination titre tests.

Titre testing is available at Paws N’ Claws Veterinary Surgery, at both our Yishun and Upper Thomson clinics. Have a question? WhatsApp us at 8891 4417 (Upper Thomson) or 8809 0787 (Yishun).

What Are Vaccination Titer Tests?

Think of a titre test as a way to check the animal’s internal defence system’s memory.

This simple blood test measures the level of antibodies present for specific diseases. Such antibodies are proteins that the animal’s body produces in response to a vaccine or exposure to a virus.

A high titer level indicates strong immunity, while a low level suggests waning immunity and the need for a booster jab.

Why Consider Titre Testing?

There are several reasons why vaccination titer testing might be a good option for your pet:

1. Reduced vaccination frequency: Studies have shown that immunity from some vaccines can last longer than the standard one-year booster schedule. Titer testing helps avoid unnecessary vaccinations, minimising potential side effects and saving on costs.

2. Senior pets: As pets age, their immune systems weaken. Titer testing can help determine whether a full vaccine dose is safe for an elderly pet, or if a modified vaccination protocol is needed.

3. Rescue pets: With adopted, rescued, or fostered animals, it is common to not know their accurate vaccination history. Titer testing helps establish their immunity levels to avoid administering unnecessary vaccines.

4. Travel requirements: Some countries require proof of immunity for specific diseases before allowing furkids to enter, as part of pre-export health checks for pets. Titer tests can provide reliable documentation for these regulations.

Vaccination Titer Testing in Singapore

The good news is that titre testing is becoming increasingly available in Singapore.

Here are some considerations for dog, cat, and rabbit owners in Singapore if you are keen to get a titer test:

Consult your veterinarian: Discuss titer testing with your vet to determine whether it’s suitable for your pet. They can advise on specific diseases to test for based on your pet’s age, lifestyle, and any potential health risks.

• Not a replacement for core vaccinations: Titer testing should not replace the core vaccinations for animals as recommended by Singapore’s Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) under NParks.

These core vaccines — against canine distemper virus (CDV), canine adenovirus (CAV), canine parvovirus (CPV), feline parvovirus and feline panleukopenia virus (FPV), feline calivirus (FCV), and feline herpesvirus (FHV) — should be given to all dogs and cats in Singapore to protect them from severe, life-threatening diseases.

• Testing options: Several commercially available tests can measure antibody levels for various diseases. Your vet will recommend the most appropriate test based on your pet’s needs.
