Microscopy And Diagnostics For Pets

Our clinic facilities at both Yishun and Upper Thomson are equipped to conduct full in-house blood lab tests, urine analysis, skin analysis, eye and ear examinations, and more.

We take a comprehensive approach to pet healthcare. Beyond physical examinations, we offer extensive, advanced in-house microscopy and diagnostic services to gain a deeper understanding of your pet’s health.

Urinalysis
Microscopy

These vital tools allow us to analyse various samples, provide an accurate diagnosis, and determine the most appropriate course of action — leading to the best possible treatment plan for your pet.

Microscopic Examinations

At Paws N’ Claws Veterinary Surgery, our clinics’ microscopes allow our veterinarians and veterinary nurses and technicians to examine samples in close detail.

This microscopic analysis plays a crucial role in diagnosing a wide range of conditions, including:

Parasites: Microscopic examination of the pet’s faecal (poop or stool) samples can reveal the presence of internal parasites such as worms and coccidia (pictured).

• Skin and ear issues: Ear swabs, skin tape impressions, skin scrapings or cytology (cell samples) examined under a microscope can help identify mites (pictured), bacterial infections, fungal infection, or even certain types of tumours.

• Skin mass assessment: Masses and swellings can be aspirated and the sample will be assessed under the microscope to check for cell types that can suggest if a mass is inflammatory, benign or malignant.

Diagnostics

Our in-house laboratory capabilities extend beyond microscopy. We provide a suite of diagnostic services that can provide a more holistic picture of your pet’s health, such as:

• Urine analysis: Urinalysis helps evaluate kidney function, detect urinary tract infections, and identify other potential problems.

• Blood cell analysis: A complete blood count (CBC) provides valuable information about your pet’s red and white blood cell count, platelets, and overall blood cell health. Abnormalities can indicate infections, anaemia, immune system issues, or other underlying conditions.

• Blood chemistry panels: These panels assess organ function (e.g. liver, kidneys), measure electrolytes, and provide information about blood sugar levels — all crucial for diagnosing various medical conditions.

• Infectious disease testing: We are equipped to test for a wide variety of conditions in-house — including giardia (a parasite that causes a common intestinal infection that often leads to diarrhea), toxoplasma, leptospirosis in dogs, heartworm disease, babesia in dogs (babesiosis is a predominantly tick-borne infection), FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus) and FELV (feline leukemia virus) in cats, and many more.

Having these in-house capabilities at our vet clinics means we can greatly shorten the turnaround time to get test results and findings.

In this photo, taken at our clinic, a test kit shows a positive result for leptospirosis, an infectious bacterial disease that can affect both humans and animals. One of our canine patients had tested positive for the infection.

Benefits of in-house diagnostics

What are the advantages of performing these diagnostic tests in-house at our vet clinic? This can provide you and your furkid with faster results, help you and our veterinary team make informed decisions, and reduce stress.

It allows for quicker access to test results, which means the veterinarian will be able to make a prompt diagnosis and initiate treatment sooner. This is especially important when pets are critically ill and a customised treatment plan would greatly help with patient outcomes.

Having all the information readily available also allows your veterinarian to collaborate with you and develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to your pet’s specific needs.

When the diagnostic tests are done at the same clinic, it minimises the number of vet visits for tests — this can make it less stressful for your pet, especially for anxious animals.

Fear-Free Veterinary Care

Understanding that a trip to the vet can cause stress and anxiety in furkids, our team at Paws N’ Claws is committed to the Fear-Free approach to veterinary care. We believe that your pet’s emotional health is as important as their physical health.

This evidence-based philosophy focuses on minimising stress and promoting a positive experience for your pet throughout their veterinary care journey with us. We employ various techniques, such as:

  • Offering (healthy) treats, toys, petting, or brushing
  • Minimising handling and restraint
  • Using calming medications and pheromones
  • Speaking in quiet, reassuring voices
  • Creating a comfortable environment with blankets and towels, and calm music
  • Practising positive reinforcement

From the moment they enter our clinic to the time they leave, we strive to make every visit as comfortable and enjoyable as possible for your pets.

We understand that you want the best possible care for your pet, and we’re here to provide it in a way that prioritises their comfort and well-being.
