Blood Donation: Register Your Pet

Your pet could save lives. Register your dog or cat as a blood donor today, to help patients needing life-saving blood transfusions especially in emergencies.

Seriously ill or injured animals often urgently need to receive blood from healthy dogs and cats. These critical cases include severe blood loss from trauma, auto-immune disease, anaemia, poisoning, or bleeding associated with surgery.

Demand for these life-saving transfusions is ever-growing, but unfortunately there is a lack of blood bank facilities and a constant shortage of volunteer pet blood donors in Singapore.

Register your dog or cat to be on our blood donor list — we will contact you when a blood donation is required. This significantly cuts down on the time, effort, and stress in identifying a suitable donor in an emergency, which will truly be a great help to patients who urgently need blood as soon as possible.

If you are interested to sign up your pet to join the blood donor registry, please WhatsApp us at 8891 4417 (Upper Thomson) or 8809 0787 (Yishun).

Can my pet donate blood?

Your dog or cat may be an ideal blood donor if they fulfill these criteria:

– Age: 1 to 8 years old
– Weight: at least 5kg for cats, or at least 20kg for dogs
– Male or nulliparous (has never been pregnant) female
– Up to date on core vaccinations
On monthly flea, tick, and heartworm preventives
– Has never received any blood transfusion
– Not on certain long-term medications (case-by-case basis)

How can my pet become a blood donor?

If you are interested to sign up your pet to join the blood donor registry, please WhatsApp us at 8891 4417 (Upper Thomson) or 8809 0787 (Yishun). Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

After you register your interest, our friendly staff will ask screening questions to consider whether your pet is suitable to be a blood donor.

You will not be charged for any costs associated with your furkid’s kind donation.

As a token of our appreciation, all canine and feline donors with Paws N’ Claws will receive complimentary benefits including:

Free health/wellness check — this includes a physical examination by our veterinarians and full blood work (comprehensive blood screening e.g. complete blood count, biochemical profile, blood parasite).

Free blood typing when they first join our donor list, to ensure their suitability for donation.

Free infectious disease screening — for dogs: e.g. heartworm, ehrlichiosis, anaplasma, babesia gibsoni; and for cats: e.g. feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV).

We appreciate all our blood donor heroes and would love to give them special recognition and thanks.

What is the donation process?

Donating blood is a safe and simple process. In addition, we apply Fear-Free methods to help all pets feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible, by minimising any fear, stress, and anxiety.

The entire process, from the donor pet’s arrival at our clinic to the collection of blood, usually takes about 2 to 3 hours.

We will need to collect blood from the donor through venipuncture — using a needle to draw blood from a vein. We carefully match the donor’s blood type with the recipient’s.

As there are no blood bank facilities at our clinic, the blood collected from your dog or cat is meant to be transfused to the recipient pet very soon after collection. This means we are unable to get blood donations in advance to be stored and banked for future use.

The blood is administered intravenously (IV) for the recipient, similar to how humans receive blood transfusions.

Our veterinary team including the veterinarian will closely monitor both the donor and the recipient during the collection and transfusion to ensure their safety and well-being.

The blood collection process is not painful — your pet will be gently sedated to ensure they remain calm and comfortable throughout.

During the collection process, we typically recommend that pet owners do not come into the treatment area. This is because most pets tend to be calmer when their owners are not present, making the process quicker, safer, and easier for everyone.

You can choose to wait at our clinic’s reception area while your pet is donating blood, but it is not required. Some owners prefer to come back later when the pet is ready to go home.
